Gates pessimistic on Tehran accord

Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, on Tuesday said Tehran’s response to Washington’s overtures had not been encouraging and played down the prospects of a breakthrough in relations with the Islamic republic.

But after a meeting in Cairo with Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president, Mr Gates said that the Obama administration would continue to reach out to Iran. The US, he said, was “not willing to pull the hand back yet because we think there is still some opportunity”.
