Tories pledge to create 5,000 extra jail places

David Cameron will today publish plans for an ambitious prison-building programme under a future Conservative government in a move likely to raise fresh questions about his party's spending plans.

The Tory prison reform strategy will highlight a target of providing 5,000 extra prison places in the first term of a Conservative government over and above Labour plans, taking capacity to more than 100,000.
