That horrid screeching sound is the mighty Northern Rock mortgage machine being slammed into forward gear again.

Having spent the best part of the past year reversing at high speed – and, in the process, repaying two-thirds of the government’s £27bn loan – the nationalised lender is now driving back into the mortgage market.
