Local authorities would have “no excuse for excessive increases” in council tax, ministers said after Gordon Brown announced £813m extra funding for councils.
The money is part of a new two-year financial settlement which Phil Woolas, local government minister, said would make “high council taxes a thing of the past”. He warned local authorities that they faced caps on their budgets if they did not keep to government demands to keep council tax rises below 5 per cent.
