'Bullied' bank drops crime fight in S Africa

One of South Africa's banks was accused of caving in to political pressure yesterday after it cancelled at the last minute a campaign to get millions of people to appeal to President Thabo Mbeki to do more to fight violent crime.

First National Bank paid for more than two million copies of a supplement to be inserted into all South Africa's big newspapers to highlight growing public anxiety about crime.
