Gas explosions kill miners in China

Two separate gas explosions claimed the lives of at least 53 miners in China at the weekend. Yesterday, 32 deaths were confirmed from an explosion in south-west Yunnan province and another 21 from a similar blast in north-east Heilongjiang province.

The two accidents are evidence that Beijing and local governments continue to struggle with the inspection and closure of high-risk mines, especially those that are private.
