MEPs vote for ‘blue cards’

European industry could soon plug skill shortages with highly qualified immigrants from developing countries under a new “blue card” scheme backed by MEPs on Thursday.

The card will carry a more generous salary entitlement than first envisaged, guaranteeing incoming workers earnings of 1.7 times their host country’s gross average. But parliamentarians dashed expectations by dropping plans to introduce a “fast-track” system for skilled workers under 35.
