Jamie Sokalsky had never seen a gold mine – or any other kind of mine – when he joined Barrick Gold as its treasurer in late 1993.

Mr Sokalsky’s previous job was at George Weston, a Canadian food processor and distributor. In some ways, he recalls, the switch was easy: “In the financial management business, money is money, and gold is just like another currency.”
