African Union troops' first offensive retakes Comoros island

African Union forces yesterday launched the first military offensive in the body's six-year history by backing troops from the tiny Indian Ocean archipelago of the Comoros that retook a rebel-controlled island.

The mission included troops from Sudan - which has consistently obstructed the work of AU peacekeepers on its own territory in the province of Darfur - and Tanzania.
