Valley view: Global crashes spark crisis of confidence

For a few hours last month, the world seemed to be coming to an end. A crash in one market was quickly being repeated around the globe and panic was rife.

What had triggered the crisis was not immediately clear, but confidence in the whole system had been shaken. It was the latest in a series of shocks this year that had brought into question our growing dependence on complex mechanisms that few people understand.
