Irish growth data signal extent of Europe woe

Ireland, the best-performing European economy for the past decade, on Wednesday slashed its growth forecasts in the face of a deepening housing slump and slower manufacturing activity.

Brian Lenihan, finance minister, said gross national product would grow by 0.5 per cent, compared with a 3 per cent target announced in the December budget.
