Edinburgh finds itself on a downward curve

Scotland’s Nationalists won power in 2007 on a programme that envisaged its destiny as part of an “arc of prosperity” of small, independent countries stretching from Ireland to Iceland.

That no longer looks quite so admirable an ambition. The problems facing those countries have led political opponents to taunt the devolved Scottish government in Edinburgh about its “arc of insolvency”.
