BBC challenges critics over licence fee

The BBC threw down the gauntlet to critics on Wednesday, saying the public did not want to see its licence fee shared with other broadcasters and dismissing critics such as James Murdoch as “desperately out of touch”.

After a summer in which the government and its commercial rivals identified the BBC as both the partial cause of and the possible solution to a financial crisis afflicting UK television, the corporation hit back defiantly.
