German data fuel eurozone stagflation fear

European industry yesterday showed fresh signs of spluttering in the wake of global economic storms, with Germany reporting much sharper than expected falls in output in the sector.

The latest German data, showing the largest monthly drop in industrial production in May since August 1997, will add to fears that the eurozone is sliding towards "stagflation", slow growth with high inflation.
