Zimbabwe’s opposition leader was detained by police and held without charge for eight hours on Wednesday while campaigning in the south-west of the country for the June 27 presidential run-off election.

Morgan Tsvangirai, the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, and a dozen party officials, including the deputy leader, were detained at a roadblock and taken to a police station in the town of Lupane, south-west of Bulawayo.
