Copper is the world’s best-performing commodity this year, other than freight, having risen 64 per cent to trade at about $5,000 a tonne.

Last July, at the peak of the commodity boom, copper traded at $8,940 on the London Metal Exchange. At its trough in late-December, copper traded as low as $2,810.
