The spectre of Mifid haunts mid-tier banks

While the official launch of new European securities rules today has focused attention on exchanges, the most severe impact of the new regime may fall on intermediaries - the brokerages and investment banks that profit from trading.

The Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (Mifid) may therefore ultimately lead to a badly needed and overdue shake-up in European banking.
