Matthew spent more than two decades in the City as a functioning alcoholic, holding down a senior job in a top-tier investment bank. He has been sober for six years but says that, if anything, his performance was better when he was a drunk.

“I was more of a success when I was drinking than I am now. I was earning more, I was more highly ranked in surveys and was incred­ibly driven and ruthless. I was a nasty piece of work,” he says.
