CIOs clinging on just a little longer

Thirty years ago, the job hardly existed. Even today there is a slight air of impermanence about the title “chief information officer”, as if the role might vanish overnight.

The reason is that a principal function of the CIO is to support top management, providing it with the information technology knowledge and skills that it lacks – and that may not be the case for much longer.
