US abandons toxic assets buy-out

The US government yesterday abandoned its plan to buy toxic assets, feeding a broad sense of gloom as equity markets plunged to levels approaching their October lows.

Hank Paulson, Treasury secretary, said the money would be better spent on an expanded recapitalisation programme and supporting markets that securitise consumer credit.
