Japan faces spectre of deflation as CPI falls

Japanese consumer prices fell for the first time in 18 months in March, stoking fears that the recession afflicting the country could be aggravated by deflation.

Data on the 0.1 per cent year-on-year drop in the core consumer price index came alongside figures showing unemployment in March rising to a four-year high of 4.8 per cent and wages falling by the most in six years.
