Manufacturing costs hit 17-year high

The pressures of high commodity prices and a weakening currency hit manufacturers in March, with output price inflation rising to a 17-year high and cost inflation reaching the highest levels on record.

The Office for National Statistics said factory gate prices rose 0.9 per cent between February and March, taking the annual rate of increase from 5.9 per cent to 6.2 per cent in March – the highest since 1991.
