Aldi progresses steadily in US

Aldi, the hard-discount grocer, hopes to open its first store in New York City next year, as the German-owned chain continues its steady US expansion, writes Jonathan Birchall.

Privately held Aldi has expanded to a chain of almost 1,000 stores in the central and eastern US since 1976, when it opened its first store outside Chicago.
