Diseases leave struggling farmers on brink

The re-emergence of foot-and-mouth has cost beleaguered farmers an estimated £2m a day in lost exports and in excess of £100m since late August, according to the National Farmers’ Union.

But the wider significance of the sector’s woes, compounded by the recent discovery of bluetongue, has been thrown into question against a background of long-term decline.
