Koizumi aide tries to ease China tensions over shrine

A senior Japanese politician yesterday sought to quell tensions with China by proposing the separation of war criminals from other war dead enshrined in Yasukuni shrine.

The comments from Hidenao Nakagawa, a senior aide to Junichiro Koizumi, prime minister, came as a new survey indicated three out of five Japanese believe Mr Koizumi should not visit the shrine.
