Sri Lanka to probe rights abuse claims

The Sri Lankan government has moved to set up its own inquiry into allegations of serious human rights abuses during its final push against ethnic Tamil Tiger rebels between January and May this year.

The move, which follows increasing concern in western countries over Sri Lanka’s conduct during the war that could lead to curbs on European trade with the island, comes as the government said it was resettling thousands of Tamils displaced in the conflict.
