Putin strikes deal with Sofia on South Stream

Vladimir Putin won Bulgaria’s support for the South Stream gas pipeline project on Friday, making an important breakthrough for a project designed to secure Russian gas supplies to the European Union.

South Stream, a joint venture between Russia’s Gazprom and Eni of Italy intended to carry 30bn cubic metres of gas a year, would make Bulgaria a gateway for Russian natural gas deliveries to south-east Europe and beyond.
