Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, addresses the US Congress today, kicking off a busy schedule of events commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, writes Chris Bryant in Berlin .

The invitation to speak about the lasting significance of the events of 1989 is a coup for Ms Merkel, who becomes only the second German chancellor to address Congress, following Konrad Adenauer in 1957.
