Judge approves bankruptcy arrangement to aid insurers

The first "solvent schemes of arrangement", a bankruptcy mechanism used by insurers to deal with their long-term exposure to future claims, have been approved by a judge in London since their viability was thrown into question earlier this year by a High Court decision.

Lawyers said the move showed that such schemes, which had been growing in popularity ahead of the surprise decision in July in a case involving British Aviation Insurance Company, were still achievable if structured appropriately.
