Obama VP speculation rife as lead dwindles

Speculation over who Barack Obama would choose as his running mate over the next 48 hours was rife on Wednesday as one national opinion poll showed him trailing Republican rival John McCain by 5 percentage points.

Mr Obama, according to some reports, was about to choose Evan Bayh, the senator for Indiana since his wife, Susan, had been spotted at the hairdresser.
