This Monkey has made quite a journey already. Having started life as a co-production between the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and the Manchester International Festival, it has also been seen at the Spoleto USA festival, and now, with one bound, it’s back in the UK.

Chen Shi-Zheng, who conceived the idea and wrote the scenario, was fascinated by the Chinese classic Xi You Ji (Journey to the West) and wanted to bring the magical tale alive on stage. Working with Damon Albarn from Blur and Gorillaz as composer, and Jamie Hewlett for the visuals, he went on an artistic pilgrimage back to China, put together a company there of acrobats and martial artists, and rolled everything into a stage spectacular.
