Competition ruling opens up possibility of water mergers

A Competition Commission ruling has left the door ajar for monopoly water companies to merge with each other provided takeovers do not "prejudice the ability" of Ofwat, the industry regulator, to impose proper controls.

Merger activity in the sector has been restricted by Ofwat's opposition to takeovers that would reduce the number of companies in the sector.
