Veteran who redrew face of high street

Arthur Ryan, who is stepping down as the chief executive of Primark after 40 years, has helped redraw the map of the British high street.

The famously secretive retailer, who was poached by Primark’s parent Associated British Foods in 1969 to create a retail clothing business, has been at the forefront of the discount revolution that has helped drive down the price of clothing in the UK.
