US crude oil prices briefly passed $80 a barrel but a recovery in the dollar weighed on commodity markets on Tuesday.

Nymex November West Texas Intermediate, expiring on Tuesday, reached a 2009 high of $80.05 a barrel but fell 52 cents to $79.09. December WTI, the benchmark from today, lost 84 cents at $79.12 after hitting $80.40 in the session.
