Neglected diseases: Small groups are a solution

California may be home to some of the world’s most brilliant biotechnologists, but from her office in San Francisco, Victoria Hale is trying to recruit scientists who also have a passion for applying their skills to the welfare of the poor.

The Institute for OneWorld Health, which she founded in 2000, was designed as a pharmaceutical company created around the philosophy that “decisions could be based on global need rather than financial opportunity”.
