Detroit prepares to swallow some bitter medicine

Among the many conditions imposed on Chrysler by Washington in the bail-out of 1979, none is said to have angered the carmaker's then chief Lee Iacocca more than being forced to sell the corporate jet.

The bosses of General Motors, Ford Motor and Chrysler may find themselves making similar sacrifices if they hope to persuade Congress to advance $25bn in emergency funding for their companies.
