Network Rail misses savings target

The company that runs Britain’s mainline rail network cut its operating costs by £360m in the year to March 31 as it sought to bring the soaring price of running the system under control.

However, Network Rail confirmed on Wednesday it fell short of its regulator’s target that it cut unit costs by 31 per cent over the five years to the end of March, achieving savings of 27 per cent – to create annual cost savings of £1.7bn. The target was the only regulatory target missed for the five years, with other targets such as that for train punctuality achieved.
