Optimism fuels Footsie’s best quarter

UK blue chips have propelled the leading FTSE index to its best three months in its quarter-century history, fuelled by a flood of government liquidity and investors’ hopes for a lasting economic recovery.

Page one FTSE graphic The FTSE 100, which closed down slightly on Wednesday at 5,133.9, has gained almost 21 per cent since the end of June, outpacing any other quarterly rise since the index’s establishment in 1984.
