Tom Wise, the former UK Independence party MEP, pleaded guilty yesterday to fiddling expenses in a case that has proved highly embarrassing to the Europhobic group.

Ukip has campaigned on the furore over MPs' expenses and hopes to capitalise on Tory rank-and-file anger over David Cameron's rejection this week of a referendum on the Lisbon treaty.
