Court backing for compulsory retirement rules

Business leaders on Tuesday welcomed a European court ruling that would allow employers to force workers to quit when they reached their normal retirement age without breaching EU age discrimination rules.

Lawyers, however, were divided over whether the judgment by the European Court of Justice would undermine a legal challenge under way to British laws that allow employers to retire workers when they reach the age of 65 without providing any justification.
