British Airways’ proposed venture with Qantas is its most audacious attempt yet to create a global airline, but far from its first.

The company’s history is pockmarked with episodes of stake-building and offloading, approaches and fallings-through, as its determination to extend its reach has butted against regulatory and political barriers.
