Exciting times for young creative talent

If necessity really is the mother of invention, then no wonder creativity goes into overdrive during a recession. Nowhere is that more obvious than in the field of contemporary jewellery design where a growing number of young British jewellers - or YBJs as they are called - are not going to let rising world gold prices stand in their way.

Led by Philippa Holland and Anthony Roussel, designers such as these are making one-of-a-kind pieces from the most unlikely materials; sustainable wood, plastic and enamelled silver. Others such as Jo Hayes-Ward and Laura Hayward take inspiration from architecture to create beautifully sculpted pieces.
