Transport offers little to help stimulate economy

Alistair Darling will be forced to exclude virtually all transport projects from his plans to bring forward spending to mitigate the impact of the recession, Geoff Hoon, the transport secretary, has warned.

The chancellor's Keynsian approach of increasing public works to protect jobs and stimulate demand would seem a natural fit for the government's ambition to build new roads, railways and runways.
