Few people outside Royal Bank of Scotland have heard of Mark Fisher. But the employees of ABN Amro are about to find out what he is capable of.

On Thursday, the 47-year old career banker was nominated to take over as chairman of ABN’s managing board, effectively making him the next chief executive of the 193-year-old Dutch bank. If everything goes to plan, he will be the last person to hold that title.
