Parts of the new strategy for EU trade policy proposed by Peter Mandelson this week are doable and parts of it are sensible. Rather too few of them are both at once.
The stalling of the Doha talks in July provided the cue for the EU to unleash the plan's centrepiece: a long-trailed strategy of hurtling round the world trying to catch up with the US in signing bilateral and regional trade deals.
