As the New Orleans Saints prepared to play the San Diego Chargers in front of a sell-out Wembley crowd on Sunday, one player confessed to a little bemusement at the stir created by the contest between bitter rivals in the US’s National Football League.

“I’m not sure who they’re going to cheer for,” LaDainian Tomlinson, the Chargers’ running back, said before Sunday night’s game.
