Pity the Chicago Board of Trade's real estate division. The art deco structure's vast trading halls are emptying fast as pit traders in financial futures switch to electronic trading.

But while the CBOT agonises over its soon-to-be vacant space, it can scarcely complain. With its derivatives business humming, it is planning an initial public offering hoping to mimic the performance of its cousin, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
