Landmark Communications, the privately owned US media company that owns The Weather Channel, yesterday said it was considering a sale, in a move that could draw interest from rivals NBC and News Corp.

According to people familiar with the matter, the company could be worth more than $5bn, although moves are under way to split the business in two.
