The vast sheds of the shipyard at Wismar, in north-east Germany, are once again echoing to the sound of steel sheets being hammered into place. The arcs of welders’ torches are again lighting up the halls’ gloom.

Shipyard in peril
The yard, whose previous owner, Wadan Yards, collapsed into insolvency in June , resumed work last month on two ferries being built for Sweden’s Stena Line, one of the world’s biggest ferry operators. But questions remain about how many more ships the Wismar yard and a sister yard at Warnemünde on Germany’s Baltic Sea coast will produce.
