Berlin plays down Steinbrück’s attack on UK

Berlin on Thursday sought to play down the attack by Peer Steinbrück on Britain’s economic crisis management, but opposition politicians said the finance minister’s outburst was damaging Germany’s influence abroad.

Torsten Albig, finance ministry spokesman, said Mr Steinbrück’s criticism was narrowly aimed at the use of value-added tax cuts to fight the worsening economic slump but was not an attack on “our British friends.”
